This wednesday I watched James Bond’s movie Casino Royale (IMDb|FilmAffinity).

The film has had mixed reviews, with some people saying it’s “the best” Bond film ever, some others saying Daniel Craig fits in the James Bond role like a bulldog in a ballet. I’d say neither is correct. To me, the movie is quite good, and Craig is really well in his role. However, it is a bit too long (time passed quickly for me, though), and has a little too little action. Maybe it’s better that way. The plot is also ridiculous, with extra bits of non sequiturs and flat-out nonsenses, like Bond getting into the unattended security room of a hotel with no hassle whatsoever, not to speak of how fast he finds it (first door he opens, and that’s there). The actual logic of the plot, however, has never been the main point of any action movie, and Bond films are no exception, so “Casino Royale” is on pair with the others.

If you like James Bond, there is no reason why you shouldn’t stop reading this and hurry up to a cinema to watch it.

This wednesday I went to the cinema with my workmate Julen, and we watched “Little Miss Sunshine” (IMDb|FilmAffinity).

It is a hell of a good movie, humble and simple, but with a very good plot, and very good acting. Drama and comedy are intermixed, with the latter being more prominent. One does not spend the whole movie laughing, but when the moments come, one laughs out loud.

I wholeheartedly recommend this film to anyone not feeling that a movie needs lasers and explosions to be any good.

Ayer ví El laberinto del fauno, de Guillermo del Toro (IMDb|FilmAffinity).

Me habían dicho que era un poco gore, y que podía impresionar al espectador… pero la verdad es que no es para tanto. Hay algunas escenas truculentas, pero tampoco nada exagerado. Por otro lado también me habían dicho que era muy buena… y en eso no han fallado. No es la mejor película que he visto, e incluso quizá sean exagerados los comentarios de que es candidata firme al Oscar a la mejor película extranjera… pero está muy bien, hay que admitirlo.

Los actores están soberbios, sobre todo Sergi López en su papel de capitán franquista. La puesta en escena está muy cuidada, con gran realismo en escenarios y guión, al menos en la parte “realista” de la peli. Hay, entretejida con la parte “real” una parte de fantasía, en la que en principio el espectador no sabe si tal fantasía es también real, o solo imaginada por la niña protagonista.

Hay algún agujero suelto por ahí, pero en general está hecha con mucho esmero, y el resultado es 100% recomendable de ver.

95% screaming and 5% crying. That’s what I felt when watching An incovenient truth (es: Una verdad incómoda) (IMDb|FilmAffinity).

Crying because some problems are huge, and are real. And it is sad. Screaming because there are so many sons of a bitch trying to get away with their dirty business, disguised as “skeptics” of Global Warming.

The movie is a kind of documentary about Global Warming, featuring Al Gore as conductor. Good ol’ Al may ring a bell to you: yes he’s the one who came on top of George Bush in the 2000 US Presidential Elections, but nonetheless was declared loser due to highly controversial decisions by the US Supreme Court.

The movie is tagged by some people as “boring” or “not really saying anything new”. I disagree. I am no GW expert, but by no means illiterate, either. I have a B.Sc. in Chemistry, soon to get the Ph.D. (albeit in Quantum Chemistry, which has little direct link with enviromental matters), and I did find the movie interesting.

Some of the data presented is, of course, redundant to some extent, but nonetheless it seems appropriate to mention it once again, even if “we all know it”. However, there is a non-trivial amount of data that, at least for me, was new. To name three such points:

• Of over 900 scientific articles studied, NOT ONE cast any doubt about the human source of the excess CO₂ in the atmosphere, or this excess being the culprit of the global warming. There is no controversy among scientist, but rather a complete agreement. On the other hand, a surprising 53% of the studied mass media (newspapers,…) did mention some “disagreements” or “doubts”, making it look like we don’t really know what causes the global warming, or if it even exists! Clearly someone is trying to intoxicate the general public with doubts, when there’s none. Think of it.
• The CO₂/temperature increase in the last decades is alleged by some to be just “a part of a trend of ups and downs”, because “temperatures have always fluctuated”. Bullshit. Gore shows studies of deep Antarctic ice that go back a friggin’ 650,000 years, and plots of atmospheric CO₂ concentration and temperature along these years. There are fluctuations, and even several glaciations could be seen. However, the CO₂ concentration and temperature deviation from the average is now more than double what has ever been! Such a trend has never ever happened before.
• Underdeveloped countries have loose environmental policies, that make them pollute a lot. Developed countries pollute more just because they have more industry, even if it is relatively cleaner. Not completely true. For example, the environmental policies regarding car manufacturing are tighter in China than in the USA. In fact, Chinese cars can be sold in the USA, but most north-american cars can not be sold in China, because they pollute too much. And that China being a book example of reckless industrialization, with little care for environment!

Go watch the movie, it’s quite informing (and no, not too boring).

I have watched Children of Men (FilmAffinity|IMDb), and I liked it very much.

The sinopsis is simple: in a near future (year 2027) the humankind has long lost the hability to procreate, so that the youngest persons on Earth are over 18. All nations have crashed, except Great Britain, were an oppressive social setup, close to a fascist regime, remains as the last stronghold of “civilization”. Needless to say, inmigration presure is brutal, as are counter-inmigration measures.

This scenario, and the story that is told, feels at first a bit unrealistic. There are a lot of details that make little sense, or one would think that can not happen. However, as the movie advances, one gets the scary feeling that it could happen. Suddenly, interpersonal relationships, politics, economics… don’t seem a bit “sci-fi”, but rather, one starts to fear them, for their realism.

I would not like a future like that, but the most frightening thing is that it is one of the most verisimilar cataclismic futures in science fiction movies I’ve seen.

Except for one thing: nowadays (much less in 20 years’ time) it is not to fear an eventual extintion of mankind just because men and/or women are infertile, since artificial procreation means are available, even clonation if need be. There would be hard times, and humankind would not be the same… but it would surely survive.

This week I have watched Running Scared (“La prueba del crimen”) (IMDb|FilmAffinity[es]).

It is a good action movie, albeit a bit too violent at moments. The photography has some Tony Scott-like moments of choppy and fuzzy scenes, but much less pronounced than in, e.g., Domino.

The plot is well drafted, and the story is absorbing. Too bad the end is confusing, violent and Hollywoodesque. There are some plot twists that add to the value of the movie, but others are mere concessions at “all ends well”. However, it is much more dark and bitter than your average cops/mob movie, where nothing really bad ever happens.

All in all, I would say this movie is not bad, and deserves to be watched.

Ayer vi esta película (IMDb|FilmAffinity), y me gustó mucho.

La verdad es que una más de las películas que retratan el precio del éxito, y tampoco la mejor… pero está bien, y es amena. Me esperaba una crítica más brutal al mundo de la moda, pero en el fondo esta temática solo es tratada como ambientación. Si cambiamos la revista de moda Runway (donde la protagonista Anne Hathaway encuentra trabajo, bajo las órdenes de la tiránica y caprichosa Meryl Streep) por una empresa automovilística o una farmaceutica, las cosas no cambian mucho.

El contraste entre la poco sofisticada protagonista y sus glamurosas compañeras de trabajo da pie a situaciones divertidas, pero el tema de fondo no es el mundo de la moda, sino la traición y la falta de escrúpulos para lograr el triunfo.

Ayer vi Separados(FilmAffinity|IMDb) en el cine.

Aunque pudo haber sido mejor, la verdad es que me gustó. Está llena de clichès, pero están bien usados, y ¿no son todas las relaciones sentimentales repeticiones de los mismos clichès? Nos gusta pensar que nuestra relación es única, pero en el fondo lo mismo les ha pasado ya a millones de parejas, y ha sido retratado en cientos de películas.

Quizá decir que esta película hace reflexionar es pasarse, pero ciertamente no es tan ligera como aparenta. Me sentí reconfortado al verla, porque en vez de identificarme con Vince Vaughn, era la postura de Jennifer Aniston la que me resultaba comprensible. ¡Menudo figura el Vince este!

Aviso: lo que sigue contiene detalles de la trama

Lo insoportable de Vince no es que sea vago, o no ayude en casa. Lo que colma el vaso de la paciencia de Jennifer es que no le importan sus prioridades. Jennifer le encarga que compre 12 limones para decorar la mesa en una cena familiar (mientras ella hace todo el resto), y él trae solo 3. El problema no es el error en sí, sino que, una vez aclarado dicho error, él no es capaz de volver a bajar a por otros 9 limones… simplemente porque en el fondo no da ningún valor a la necesidad que vea Jennifer por tener 3, 12 o 200 limones. No es capaz de decirse: “comprar tantos limones para decorar la mesa me parece una chorrada, pero si a ella le parece importante, para mí es importante”. No, él se queda en “me parece una chorrada”, y ya está. Y lo mismo con acompañarla al ballet, cosa que nunca hace, porque no le gusta, mientras que ella va a todos los partidos de baseball que él quiere.

Sí, todo esto son tópicos… pero me gusta el planteamiento y la ejecución. Y también me gusta que al final se separen (he avisado que daba detalles de la peli). Me habría defraudado mucho que tras plantear una situación amarga para ambos miembros de la pareja (el separarse), Hollywood le hubiera dado el toque “todo acaba de color de rosa” marca de la casa. La peli no podía “acabar bien”, y no acaba bien.

My weekly movie yesterday consisted in Edison Force (Ciudad sin ley[es]).

Despite the horrible critics it has had, I have to say that I liked it. Well, yes, it offers little more than clichès, and the plot is a little unbelievable at moments… but it is entertaining.

Not the world’s best movie, but worth watching (if there’s nothing better in the theater).

Ayer fui a ver Alatriste (IMDb, FilmAffinity).

No sé si calificar esta peli de genial, o de fracaso total. Como película, globalmente me ha gustado, aunque hay que admitir que cuenta muchas cosas, muy por encima, y muy poco unidas entre sí, lo cual deja una mala impresión.

Lo que más me ha extrañado ha sido la elección de los actores. Diego Alatriste está encarnado por Viggo Mortensen, actorazo estadounidense, gran profesional y mejor persona. Peeero, la idea de poner a un yankee rubio y jovial en el papel de un español moreno y huraño, no sé, es un poco chirriante. Además, Viggo habla castellano, y en la película actúa sin doblaje. El problema es que el acento natural de Viggo es (creo) argentino, con lo cual sus diálogos (aunque impecables) son poco creibles como soldado leonés del XVII.

Siguiendo con selecciones improbables, tenemos a Javier Cámara haciendo de Conde-Duque de Olivares. Cámara es otro actor que me encanta, y se ha de admitir que está muy bien en su papel, pero una vez identificamos a Paco, de “7 vidas” (por no decir al amigo de Torrente) bajo ese bigote, es virtualmente imposible tomar en serio al Conde-Duque, uno de los personajes más poderosos (y serios) de la historia de España.

En tercer lugar tenemos a Quevedo interpretado por Juan Echanove. Con este son tres de tres los grandes actores mal asignados en esta película. Con todo lo que me gusta Echanove, este Quevedo regordete y bonachón no me acaba de convencer como alguien que malvive de su agudo ingenio, que pasa hambre, y que se describe como de genio vivo y proclive a duelos de espadas (al menos en el libro).

Podría haber sido mucho mejor. Lástima, porque el proyecto lo merecía, y los actores lo hacen muy bien.
