I regularly check the visit stats at this blog, and today is the first time that the browser with most accumulated visits is [[Mozilla Firefox|Firefox]] and not [[Internet Explorer]]. IE began ahead because some Chinese hacker(s) used the Windows XP/IE6 duo to try some nasty things at the site, and generated a lot of visits. After I banned these IPs, the visits from Firefox users have gone up steadily, and now the total visit stats are:

1. Firefox 2 (33.5%)
2. Internet Explorer 6 (32.6%)
3. Firefox 1.0 (10.4%)
4. IE 7 (4%)

Regarding OSes, [[Windows XP]] is still the most prominent one, with 53% of the visits, followed by generic Linux at 12.9%, then other versions of Windows and specific Linux distros.

No haremos juicios de valor sobre si una muchacha forzada debe o no abortar si no ha denunciado el hecho… la dejaremos decidir a ella, porque es su vida y su futuro el que está en juego.

Tampoco sobre reanimar o no a un niño con malformaciones, deben de ser sus padres los que valoren si van a ser capaces de ofrecer una vida digna y sin sufrimiento al niño.

Igual le parece que somos una panda de escépticos o que hacemos una pantomima de la religión… sentimos que piense eso de nuestras creencias, pero seguimos a rajatabla los 8 “Realmente Preferiría Que no” legados por su tallarinesca santidad y eso nos obliga a ofrecernos para ayudar a los enfermos y a ofrecer a su Ilustrísima Presidenta guía espiritual en estos tiempos tan difíciles que estamos viviendo.

Por ello le rogamos que se ponga en contacto con nosotros o acceda a recibir a nuestro comité de sabios para establecer las bases de un concordato acorde a nuestras capacidades intelectuales.

Que el Monstruo Volador de Espagueti y el poder de sus carbohidratos complejos les guíe por el buen camino.

Hace poco que he cometido la blasfemia de cambiarme de [[shit|Vodafone]] a [[feces|Movistar]], y ya me he topado con el primer coñazo: el 1000 veces maldito buzón de voz. Si queréis saber más sobre este “servicio” y sus “bondades”, podéis leerlo en el sitio de Movistar.

Si visitáis la página que menciono, notaréis una curiosa carencia en ella. Venga, visitadla y no sigáis leyendo esto hasta que la hayáis encontrado… ¿Ya la habéis encontrado? Pues efectivamente: la puta página no dice cómo leches dar de baja el servicio. Mis amigos me odian porque si me llaman mientras estoy hablando con otra persona les salta el maldito buzón, y se les COBRA una llamada para NADA.

Es un servicio que no quiero, que me molesta, y que no entiendo por qué tengo. No entiendo por qué no tengo que hacer nada para que se me dé de alta, y sin embargo darse de baja es complicado. Bueno, sí lo entiendo, claro: es un medio de las operadoras de telecom para forrarse cobrando llamadas que de otra manera habrían sido “perdidas”. ¿La verdad?, me dan asco.

Update: se puede lograr la información para desactivar el buzón en esta otra página de Movistar. En resúmen: llamar al 537 y pulsar 4 (quitarlo del todo), o esperar y oir las instrucciones si eres masoca.

Remember [[Sony]] as the paladin of anti-piracy? Sony is the company behind [[Blu-ray]], a format aiming at substituting [[DVD]], devised only as a mean to avoid “piracy” (implementing [[HDMI]] connections with [[HDCP]] [[Digital rights management|DRM]] systems), and offering nothing more than 4 or 5 times better resolution (such a low price for our freedom!)

Sony is, as well, the company behind the [[XCP]] fiasco I wrote about a couple of years ago, in which they introduced malicious software (a [[rootkit]]) in their music CDs, to control what consumers copied or listened to.

Well, this saints among the saints have been apparently caught using… what?… using pirated software!!!

Finalmente Euskaltel ha considerado a mis padres dignos de ponerles, como clientes antiguos, la misma anchura de banda que a los clientes nuevos con el mismo contrato. Ahora mismo tenemos una tarifa plana de 1 Mb.

As I said 2 months ago, I made the switch to [[IMAP]] for handling my [[Gmail]] e-mail. I have to say that it’s a switch that I don’t regret at all: it gives me the convenience and comfort I want.

However I have to admit that my long-used and much loved [[KMail]] was not up to the task, for some unknown reason. My main gripe with it was that reading, moving and deleting messages took forever, and refreshing folders was a royal pain. I thought it was an unavoidable problem, related to the way IMAP works. However, I decided to give other [[e-mail client|e-mail clients]] a chance, and that I did.

I have installed and run [[Mozilla Thunderbird|Thunderbird]] (actually, Icedove, the Debian version of TB), and so far it’s given me good impressions. All the slowness I suffered with KMail is gone, and I have to say this fact alone is driving me from KM to TB.

As an additional piece of info, here’s how to set “plain text” as default for sending messages. Why would you want that? Read these tips. The reason why TB has no obvious button to set “all plain text” or “all HTML” escapes me, but that seems to be the case. However, there is an “advanced” mode of doing it: go to Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Config Editor. From the variable/value list there, you have to set (by double-clicking, for example) “mail.identity.default.compose_html” to “false”. I also set “mail.html_compose” to “false”, but the important variable seems to be the first of the two. From that point on, all the new messages you compose will be plain text.

Just when you thought that the world of proprietary software and silly “intellectual property” business couldn’t do it worse, they surprise you!

This weekend I learned about a message from a big boss at Creative Labs to an individual nicknamed daniel_k at some [[Creative Labs]] forum. Please follow the link to the message, because it is very interesting. And don’t forget to read some of the responses.

The short story is that Creative Labs produces some sound cards and their drivers. Apparently some of the drivers would not work for Windows Vista, and daniel_k managed to program drivers for Vista (and Linux, I think), and distributed them for free (asking only for voluntary donations). The result: an open message in a forum, asking daniel_k to [[cease and desist]].

The rationale for CL to do that seems to be that they didn’t release Vista drivers for the sound cards on purpose, so that customers would have to buy new cards if they switched to Vista. With daniel_k’s contributions, such customers are not forced to dump the old card for a new one, so this costs CL money!

Another example of absolutely vile acts from vendors of proprietary software (were the drivers [[free software]], this discussion would be moot), and one more reason to say fuck you all!

The good part is that the story is already being spread around the net, and a lot of customers and potential customers are becoming angry customers and potential customers. I wish CL the worst for their vileness and short sightedness on the issue. They should have supported daniel_k, and use the ensuing possitive feedback campaign… but they didn’t. Shame on you, Creative Labs!
